2017 Employment Trends

As we move further into the year, it is becoming increasingly clear that employment patterns are changing. In the Melbourne Labour Hire market, there have been significant shifts towards non-traditional employment structure. Not only is workplace culture more dynamic, it is also becoming more individualised. These trends affect employment structures across the labour hire industry, with both employees and employers looking for more.

As a labour hire and employment agency, we are dedicated to meeting the changing needs and expectations of both workers and employers. In our experience, here are some of the top trends that are emerging for 2017.

Labour Hire

Labour hire is one of the more common trends emerging this year. Figures have demonstrated that this industry is growing at an incredible rate and doesn’t look like slowing down anytime soon. This trend benefits employers by providing an alternative method for many industries. It gives companies the freedom to adjust or scale their core workforce on demand, while still keeping up skilled employees.

Flexibility

Employees are increasingly looking for more flexible alternatives as we have previously mentioned. Not only are flexible conditions attractive to employees, companies also benefit from their employees’ more positive and productive response to work. If you would like to read about this in more detail, you can read about it here.

Side jobs

Many people no longer value a traditional 9 to 5 job structure and instead prefer to work outside of these hours. This includes looking for side jobs to supplement their main source of income. From running their own freelance job on the side to options like Uber and Deliveroo, many are looking to earn money on the side.

Blended Workplaces

The rise of flexible positions and the prevalence of labour hire contracts has resulted in many businesses running blended workforces. Their permanent staff are mixed with contracted labour hire employees and even flexible staff running on different hours. This means that big projects will often have a range of employees who will need to work with each other.

 Changing Work Generations

While only just the tip of the change, 2017 marks the first year that Gen Z is able to enter the workplace. Many of these employees will only be in junior part-time positions at this stage, however, it represents the coming change. This will not only deepen the technological divide between the remaining Baby Boomers in the workplace and the upcoming generation. Not only the older generations will suffer through some teething issues, with many Millennials reported as not looking forward to the changing culture.

Employment trends change swiftly and recruitment techniques need to change in order to meet the different needs of workers and businesses.
